Servo Drive Faults and Troubleshooting

Read the drive code before clearing it

Servo drives store fault codes that disappear after a careless power cycle. Photograph the keypad/HMI fault, note which axis failed, and whether the fault happened at acceleration, constant speed, or deceleration.

Also note mechanical context: crashed axis, jammed conveyor, cold start after shutdown, or recent motor replacement. Mechanical load problems often present as drive faults.

Frequent servo fault types

Overcurrent and overload faults can mean a binding axis, incorrect motor sizing after a retrofit, or a failing power stage. Encoder and feedback faults include cable damage, connector oxidation, and lost commutation after motor work.

Following errors usually mean the drive cannot keep the commanded position under load. Regenerative or overvoltage faults appear on fast decelerations or when braking resistors are open or undersized.

Safe isolation checks

Isolate energy, then check motor cable shields, encoder connectors, and mechanical freedom of the axis. Do not keep forcing enable if the motor smells hot or the drive trips instantly. Instant trips after enable often point to shorted power cables or a failed drive module.

If a motor was recently replaced, confirm wiring pinout and encoder type match the drive parameters before assuming the new motor is defective.

Escalate when production is blocked

Call for emergency support when the axis will not enable, faults return immediately, or you lack spare drives/motors and the line cannot run in bypass. Provide drive brand, fault code, and whether other axes still move.
