How to Troubleshoot CNC Machine Alarms

Capture the alarm text, check recent changes, and isolate spindle, axis, and control faults before ordering parts.

Start with the alarm text, not the guess

Most CNC stoppages begin with an alarm number, a short message on the HMI, or a spindle/axis status bit. Before resetting anything, photograph the screen, note the exact code, and write down what the operator was doing when the machine stopped: tool change, rapid move, cutting, or idle.

Also record recent changes: new tooling, parameter edits, crashes, lubricant top-ups, or power events. Those details often decide whether the fault is mechanical, drive-related, or a control interlock.

  • Photograph the alarm screen and any secondary messages
  • Note program block, tool number, and axis positions if shown
  • Confirm E-stop, door interlocks, and air/lube pressure status

Common CNC alarm groups

Spindle alarms often point to overload, overtemperature, orientation failure, or drive communication loss. Axis alarms frequently show following error, overtravel, servo amp fault, or encoder feedback loss. Control alarms may be watchdog, PLC handshake, or safety-circuit opens that keep the machine locked out even when the mechanical side looks fine.

Do not clear alarms repeatedly without isolating the cause. Repeated resets can mask an intermittent encoder or drive fault and make the next stoppage worse.

Safe first checks on site

Verify machine is isolated for inspection, then check obvious process inputs: air pressure, hydraulic ready (if fitted), lubrication level, and chip/door switches. For axis faults, look for mechanical binding, crashed way covers, or a tool still in the spindle. For spindle alarms after a crash, treat the spindle and tool interface as suspect until proven otherwise.

If the alarm returns immediately after reset, stop cycling the machine. Capture drive LED codes or CNC diagnostics and prepare the make/model for technical support.

When to escalate to emergency repair

Escalate when production is down, the same alarm returns after a controlled reset, or you cannot safely move axes to a home position. Emergency CNC repair is also warranted after a crash with vibration, abnormal noise, or loss of spindle orientation.

Share the alarm photo, machine brand/control type, and what already failed. That short intake often cuts the first hour of on-site troubleshooting.
